Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council

In response to a history of vehicle strikes and visibility challenges along one of the A666 slip roads, we worked in partnership with Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council to deliver a precision retrofit safety solution designed to outperform conventional measures in both effectiveness and practicality.

Rather than relying on traditional infrastructure upgrades, such as additional signage, surface markings, or costly lighting systems. We implemented a smarter, low-profile intervention using 36 core-drilled and recessed REFLECT-IT R-360 studs. These compact retro-reflective units were installed directly into the existing kerbing infrastructure during an overnight operation, completed in just 3 hours with no disruption to the wider road network.

The new delineation system now provides:

  • 360° retro-reflectivity, alerting drivers from multiple angles as they approach and navigate the slip road

  • A continuous line of visual guidance, clearly defining kerb edges and reducing the likelihood of last-second corrections or collisions

  • A robust, low-maintenance alternative to raised bollards or painted lines, which can wear down quickly or be struck and damaged

By enhancing visual cues and improving spatial awareness in this high-risk zone, the installation is already delivering measurable safety benefits.

This project demonstrates the power of targeted retro-reflective infrastructure to deliver long-lasting safety results, particularly in complex environments where conventional methods fall short.
